What I Have Learned

I am always amazed how much I learn from just one class, my colleagues and my teacher!  I feel more empowered after each class I take and my success is due to the conversations and feedback that I receive from my colleagues and instructor.  So thank you to my classmates and Dr. Klein for outstanding eye opening experiences that have empowered me even more to become a stronger leader in the early childhood field and provide more quality anti-bias education to my children and families that I serve.

My hope for the children and families that I serve is that I can continue to be open minded and never be close minded to other cultures and experiences families are experiencing.  I hope that my classroom can continue to be welcoming and able to embrace all differences.

My goal for the early childhood field concerning diversity, equity and social justice is to empower other early childhood educators to work together to become more aware and provide anti-bias education in their classrooms.  It is so important that we, as any educator, realize our biases and not necessarily be in agreement with each other but be on the same page as to what anti-bias education should look like for our children.

Below you will find a YouTube video from Kid President.  I love watching him because he is a kid who has a lot of wisdom to share and I think we, as adults, need to listen to kids more.  I hope you enjoy his Pep Talk and remember that "We are all a team" and "We were born to be awesome (YouTube, 2013)!"

Thank you again for the opportunity to be enlightened by your insights and experiences!  May you have continued success on your journeys!

Nicolette

  2. Colleague Nicolette:
The first time I heard this child, I too was encouraged. Thank you for sharing this "Pep Talk." I also love your goal and hope. Like you, I want to be constantly open-minded. I know that others may not necessarily agree with my ideas, but as you have stated "we are all a team" working for the good of humanity. Good post!

  4. I to am amazed from what I learn from one class to another. I have noticed that I carry information from class to class and apply what I have learned previously. I love your hope of being open minded in the future. I too am learning to open my eyes and ears to the diversity of others. Being in the early childhood education field is about learning, growing and the development of the children, but I learning that also applies to professionals as well. Good luck in the future.

  6. Hi Nicolette,

I agree it is refreshing to be in a classroom every week and enjoy doing the work. The instructor is always giving out encouragement. All of my colleagues in this course want to teach children of different cultures to learn to be proud of it. Where you come from is who you are and being human we have to be able to screen out the negatives, if we are going to teach children of all diverse cultures. I believe we will be more informative on the issues of biases and stereotyping against another human being. Being an anti-bias educator is a very rewarding position because; you can change a child’s perspective on being prejudice of others. I know you are one of those caring individuals that will make a difference in a child’s life. Good Luck in all your endeavors.

  7. Hi Nicolette,
Great goal, it is so important to work with others, especially other early childhood educators informing them on anti-bias education and giving them tips with all that you learned through your MA will only produce positive outcomes for the children in their classrooms. And, that is what it is about -- the children -- letting them know that differences are accepted and embraced and are wonderful; thus, they are valued.
I want to thank you for your writings, I've enjoyed having you as a classmate, and I've learned a lot from your advice through your writings. Your experience with your knowledge will help many I'm sure. Thanks.
